CADDIS FLIES THREE
SOFT HACKLE FLIES
Sylvester Nemes, in his 1975
book, The Soft Hackle Fly, didn't invent the soft hackle patterns. They go
back at least to the middle 1800s with mention of "spiders" in the Practical
Angler. However, he did bring them to our attention. Fish them any
where from barely floating to the bottom. Cast more downstream as currents speed up, and
vary your mend speed and cast at an angle until you get fish. For more information,
see the informative article on fishing soft
hackle flies.

Soft Hackle, Green AKA
Partridge & Green This is the most
often asked for color combination in the soft hackle series.
Soft Hackle, Orange AKA
Partridge & Orange Orange shows up in dingy water, matches salmon eggs
and such, and is easier to see than yellow and duller patterns. This is the number two
soft hackle color combination. Great to use before and during caddis hatches. See
"fishing caddis pupa."
Soft Hackle, Yellow -- This color
combination is a sleeper. It mimics the hatching Pale Morning Dun mayfly not a caddis. The
PMD nymph emerges to the adult dun stage below the surface and finishes its ascent
swimming to the surface like a caddis pupa. If the trout are refusing your PMD dries
during the hatch give this one a try. Works for some caddis and hopper hatches, too.
Stimulator,
Yellow -- The pattern is commonly
used to fish the golden stonefly hatches of spring and summer in sizes 6 through 12. This
fly works when hoppers are available and is a caddis imitation in smaller sizes.May be the best all-round dry. 'Nuff said!

Stimulator, Orange --This color is used during the
salmon fly hatch in the Rockies and Pacific Northwest in sizes 6 & 8. Sizes 8
& 10 are popular for the October Caddis hatch in the fall.
X-Caddis --
An excellent caddis emerger or cripple pattern that rides in the film. Grease the
wing only to get the best presentation. Okay, it looks like the Rumpole of ties, but it
works for all sorts of things.
October Caddis
Skater -- This fly was designed to
"skate" across the tail-outs of pools during this fall hatch. A very exciting
fly to fish for early run steelhead.
Bead Head October Caddis Pupa -- Another
variation on the October Caddis that completes the package.
