Jetty Bug -- The name tells you how to fish this fly. Try a short leader and a
sinking tip on break- waters or around pilings. Safety note: Look out for sneaker wavers!
Perch Candy -- This very sturdy fly will also stand up to school
bluefish -- at least for a time. Also see Surf Percher II.
While it's not PC, you might try several flies on a leader. It's a winner for jack
smelt and most tropical reef fish as well.
Sand Crab -- While
early crab patterns were deer hair, and a pain to cast, this pattern works for everything
from permit and bonefish to, in particular, striped bass AKA "rocks." Tip: Crabs catch a lot
of trout in Argentina,South Africa and Chile. They also take steelhead and such in
tidewater.
Ghost Shrimp/Crayfish -- Good on
the flats, excellent over clam beds on incoming tides and decent in eel grass and other
cover where shrimp collect. This fine fly also works for steelhead, smallmouth
and other crayfish eaters in fresh waters like Idaho's Snake River.
TIP: Check our Steelhead flies tied so the hook rides up if you fish around rocks or reefs that eat flies faster than teenagers gobble popcorn.
