STEELHEAD
FLIES
Soft Hackle Nymphs
These flies are midway between a
traditional swing fly of Indian summer and the nymphs of winter. They can be fished dead
drift as a nymph and then swing them back to your side of the river.
BH
October Caddis - B.H. October Caddis Pupa, this pattern is equally effective on trout
waters as it is on steelhead rivers. It is a good choice at elevations above 800' feet
where these bugs live. Cast up river and across allowing it to sink. As it drifts below
you, tighten the line and swing it up and across the current.
Carey Special - This fly was originally designed for stillwater fishing in British
Columbia. It is a peacock bodied, soft hackle wet fly that is just as effective on
steelhead rivers.
Prince, Soft Hackle Flashback - An unusual
variation of the Prince that is a personal favorite for half pounders. We offer it because
it is "my go to fly" on the Klamath/Trinity. I fish it "damp" on a
floating line or else on a sink tip line. Keep it in the water long enough and you too
will become a believer.
BH
Prince, Soft Hackle - The large size and soft hackle make it a good choice for trout or
steelhead.
BH
Birds Nest, Olive - A good choice for the
Sacramento River system where there are caddis throughout the steelhead season.
Particularly effective on waters with rhyocophila caddis ( green rock worms).
BH Birds Nest, Tan - A soft hackled nymph for both trout and steelhead.
